I have a bunch of chronic pain disorders/immunological problems, etc., and I'm an adult survivor of child abuse. The world is a big and scary place, very overstimulating, and my energy levels aren't always suitable for hanging out in person. Behind a screen, I can control who I interact with and how, so in that way, it enables me to have community even when I physically cannot leave my house. Plus, it's a modern day library of Alexandria, if you know how to look for things and find them. What's not to love? Sure, bad people do bad things on the internet, but you could say the same about bad people writing bad books or any other medium.
At the end of the day though, what's most important to me is that it's given me a way to be a part of a community on my own terms, in a way I can access even on my worst days, when I can't get out of bed.
