I believe with empathy you possess the ability to understand and share another person's emotions. I think you need a personal connection with someone in order to experience empathy. With sympathy you feel those emotions for a person. You understand them, but that doesn't necessarily mean you put yourself into that person's shoes like you can with empathy.
